Or is it just a way to promote any old product - by giving the dumbest, most malleable people on the planet a worthless shiny token just so they turn up and mumble incoherently at whatever wonderfuly lavish, yet thinly veiled event has been organised to launch a new brand of toilet roll or whatever.

Forbes 100 most powerful celebrities: Lady Gaga wins! Twitter champion! Perfect!

All jokes aside though, what is it actually based on? Apparently it's a complex algorithm involving the number of Twitter followers and Facebook fans each potential magnate has, timesed by how close their agent is to the editor of Forbes and how much they've spent on ads in the magazine. The resulting number is so precise it's actually wrong because it's so right. Like the love between a bee and a chrysanthemum.

1. Everyone's talking about the kiss, how long it lasted and how awkward they looked. But for some reason, everyone's forgetting to mention the fact William got Kate down on her knees on top of the balcony. In front of a child and everything!

Tribeca film festival: Elton John, Martin Scorsese and the Olsen twins

Elton's shoes eh? What a pair they are. Shiny and studded and on the end of his legs, they sit like timeless monuments to his skill as a walker. Just look at them, supporting him through thick and thin red carpet. Good shoes for a good man.

Tom Waits inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, along with Alice Cooper and Dr John

Anyway, joining Alice up on stage were Elton John, Tom Waits, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Dr John, Neil Diamond and Paul Simon, although only Alice Cooper, Tom Waits, Neil Diamond and Dr John were actually being inducted. Speaking at the event, Waits had this to say:

"They say I have no hits and I'm difficult to work with – and they say it like this is a bad thing. Songs are just very interesting things to be doing with the air"

He also compared his induction to being given the key to El Paso:

Simon Cowell hits back at Elton John over claims X Factor is killing music

But how has all this come to light? Why has Simon turned against a man who provides around 30 percent of the music for X Factor?

Again, we can't tell you exactly why, but we can tell you exactly where the dirty deed was done. It was on Piers 'The Moleman' Morgan's CNN show, although Simon didn't cry at any point, so we're not entirely sure how genuine he was being:

Well, look. This is somebody who charges what - a million dollars a private gig? Two million dollars, you know?
