Born in 1980, the year that god made me, success was a long time coming for west London girl made good Estelle. After years of plugging away on the soul circuit, she scored a number on in 2008 with American Boy, a collaboration with Kanye West that also went top ten in the US. Plucky Estelle happened to spot Kanye, Mr Pomposity himself, outside a Hollywood waffle house and approached him - her directness paid off. This level-headed approach has resulted in Est' becoming a popular ambassador for UK hip hop.

The VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul event at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom took place on Sunday and featured 50 Cent, Boyz II Men, Chaka Khan, Dolly Parton, Estelle, Florence Welch, Jessie J, Martha Reeves, Mary J. Blige and Nas. It's getting boring hammering Jessie J, so we'll just say that she was there and then you can assume the rest of what you'd expect from her probably happened.
