I think my Mum still cares about Cliff- she has the calendar and everything- so she might have an opinion about him and Sue and their 'tennis matches'. I thought Cliff was gay but is celibate because, as a born-again, he is under the misapprehension that being queer is somehow 'wrong'.

Bless you. I seem to remember that at her age I ignored all advice that was offered, but I wasn't famous. She is almost certainly encouraged to behave like this by all her hangers on as it sells papers and makes her into the household name she is today. Well we have certainly benefitted from your slow-down Huxy but i'm always staggered that these people seem to have absolutely no-one around them that will be a true friend and bring them back to earth. Their lack of insight always leads them back to the parents that fucked them up in the first place. I can only look upon these types with pity, not hate. Ulimately it takes one to acknowledge their pitfalls but i have always believed you need someone to point you in the right direction when things are going awry.

If she survives to see her 30th birthday she'll hopefully realise that the whole 'live fast, die young' thing is infinitely less preferable to the 'stop being so bloody self-destructive, still have some fun, but don't kill yourself in the process' thing. I know I did.
