Fashion designer Alexander McQueen has committed suicide aged 40.

His office made a short statement:
"It is a tragic loss. We are not making a comment at this time out of respect for the McQueen family."
More news when we get it.

edit// Sky News are reporting that his body was found hanging in his London home. His mother died last week and he was due to attend her funeral tomorrow.

  • I still cannot believe that he commit suicide to be honest. He was an awesome designer and an inspiration for many people in this world. Sadly that's how life is and nobody can change it because our powers are limited. Many stars died this as well as last year.

  • I've waded thru all these abysmal comments to see if anyone's mentioned the one thing that comes to mind about this slob and unless I've missed it (and I *was* glazing over)...

... what about his use of fur in his designs for no reason at all than to achieve spoilt-brat kudos (ie the recognised benchmark for 'success in London')

    Anyway...

  • What about guilt, grief, fear of pain, dignity, apology or ,God forbid, honour. You don't need the crutch of mental illness to top yourself, just a good reason.

    tigerstail Sun, 14/02/2010 - 21:26
  • Howard Stern? What the hell are you on about?

    dennisnilsen Fri, 12/02/2010 - 23:12
  • OK OK, you win orphan boy.

Still stands though that until You are in a position where You are so crippled with mental illness that You can see no other way out; You are not in a position to judge anyone else's reasoning - unhinged as that may be. Your mate, my dad or a celebrity.

PS The Howard Stern act is so passé

    moira_roundabout Fri, 12/02/2010 - 22:54
  • I also lost my dad at 7, from a massive heart attack, he was 35. My mum suffered mentally until she died of cancer in 2005. The only way out? Fuck off.

    dennisnilsen Fri, 12/02/2010 - 22:35
  • DN
As did my dad when I was 7 so I find your comments fairly offensive. It is generally accepted that suicide is viewed as being the only way out for people suffering from a mental illness. So unless you're medically qualified or a mind reader for that matter, in this instance keep this kind of ignorant and offensive opinion to yourself, cheers.

    moira_roundabout Fri, 12/02/2010 - 22:23
  • My best friend committed suicide in 2008. He was a selfish cunt for doing it. He wasn't a celebrity. McQueen was a selfish cunt to do what he did, just before his Mother's funeral too. Fuck him and fuck my friend. Lee McQueen should be in Cunt's Corner...

    hmm...very credible.

  • I work in a boring job that pays me well to not do a lot (the joys of bureaucracy), sure I could quit and go and find something more fulfilling but there's a recession on so in the meantime I'll while away the hours however I see fit thankyouverymuch

    MJwasakiddyfiddler Fri, 12/02/2010 - 15:29
  • Fair point on the comments bit- I'm just wondering how many people on here are in full time employment as some individuals feel the need ( but more worringly have the fucking time) to post on every single story, every single posting...

    kermits Fri, 12/02/2010 - 15:10
  • What was that programme where they had a big crushing machine and put lots of people's chaotic junk into it? A way forward for your venture I reckon. I can sort of imagine you hosting this... Tesco, you on it?

  • Sort of a "Death Aid" style event ? Finally a cause worth donating too, we could make it like a telethon "Ok folks so we've reached the £2,000,000 mark and you know what that means....that's right we're gonna push The Saturdays into a giant blender !! And remember it doesn't stop there, as soon as we hit the £3,000,000 we'll be feeding Peaches Geldof feet first into an alligator pit" Just think about it....we could probably end world hunger

    MJwasakiddyfiddler Fri, 12/02/2010 - 14:00
  • Now we just need to see if we can get Bono and Chris Martin to contribute in a similar fashion.

    sodslaw Fri, 12/02/2010 - 13:51
  • It's not selfish at all. Think of the carbon saving. McQueen is just doing his bit for the environment, and we should applaud him.

    stella ah trois Fri, 12/02/2010 - 13:27
  • It annoys me when people say about suicides 'oh how selfish'..it's the act of someone in intense pain. A terrible tragedy and a great loss.

    BettySpencer Fri, 12/02/2010 - 12:02
  • re-read my post "forced to comment".
you aren't obligated to comment on everything. It's there for people to put comments if they feel as though they have something to add. Not for trolls to feel it's their duty to show everyone how amazingly cutting and witty their musings on how best they would run the website.

    Mr. HM Fri, 12/02/2010 - 11:17
  • You dont have to make comments. I comment on a fraction of the stories I read, only when I think I've got something funny to say (hmmm). I notice a few prolific people on this site use it to conduct conversations in the comments which I find pretty tedious to read. They are more interested in talking about themselves than commenting on the story. On a story like this its not worth gushing about how sad it is cos its a given but I didnt know the man so its not going to affect my life but on the other hand I cant think of anything funny to write about the corpse of a famous fashion designer so therefore I wont comment. Til now obviously. Not funny I know. Just putting in my 2 pennorth...

    shitthebed Fri, 12/02/2010 - 11:06
  • Ah, Mr HM - that is the funniest thing I've read all week.

You know when you post your stories, there's that box underneath headed 'Comments'? What do you think gets posted in there then? Floral tributes?

Can you get someone at HM Towers to film you disappearing up your own fundament and post it on YouTube please, cos I'd like to play it on a loop all day. Hypocritical cunt. No offence x

    Mr. HM Fri, 12/02/2010 - 07:42
  • Nothing has been deleted. I'm confused - which part of the news story is misplaced? A celebrity has died - we wrote about it.

    Mr. HM Fri, 12/02/2010 - 07:41
  • Well, this is a celebrity website and he was a celebrity. As sad as all people dying today is, they aren't relevant to this website.

    Mr. HM Fri, 12/02/2010 - 07:39
  • If you can't tell the difference between someone acting like a cunt and killing themselves then you're even more of a prick than you make yourself look.

I'm not sure i've ever called Katie Price a fucking hateful slag either to be honest, but there you go.

    Mr. HM Fri, 12/02/2010 - 07:38
  • What do you mean by posted for comments? Stories aren't posted specifically to get comments and no-one is forced to comment.
I've not deleted or edited any comments in this thread. People need to take their thumb out of their arse.

    Mr. HM Fri, 12/02/2010 - 07:35
  • Decca, I am sure George has some fantastic gear for you to wear that is just as good as McQueen's range, and you get a staff discount too.
Dont give up your oscar dream just yet, think George not McQueen and dont forget to thank Jesus in your acceptance speech, the yanks love that kind of shit.

I wonder what would happen if Price slashed her arteries in anger - would it be "fucking hateful slag goes out at last, huzzah" or "pitiful young (and I use that term guardedly) mother (ditto the last word) of three dies in suicidal depression"? Chances of us finding out are minimal, goddammit, but think back to the Goody decline with the big C. Then again, any mention of the C word (no, not that one) ends in an outpouring of grief and the donning of sackcloth and ashes.

I agree with Meryl - there is a smack of sanctimonious hypocrisy here, and it dunt smell too clever.

  • There's something I don't get about Mr HM posting features on celebrities dying unexpectedly. True, it's sad - like any young death. But why post it for comments - what are we supposed to say? Try to make light of it in any way and you get a tidal wave of moral indignation back in your face. Comments get deleted or edited. Login gets banned if you're deemed outrageous enough. What the fuck??!! There is nothing intrinsically funny about early death - so why do you post the news on a site whose purpose is to trivialise celebrity? Smacks of fucking hypocrisy to me.

  • Hmmmm that's one possibility or maybe......Many years ago in their student days McQueen & The director general of the BBC were out for a drink together one night when a car happened to crash nearby, rushing to help they noticed that a briefcase full of untraceable bearer bonds had spilled open on the front seat. Now the driver was injured but by no means critically so but he did have a head wound, the BBC director general seized upon the opportunity by picking up a rock and smashing the drivers head open before scooping up all the bonds. McQueen witnessed this and whilst not participating had stood by and allowed the murder to happen, realising he was involved anyway he took half the bonds and used the money to pay for his way through fashion school and bribe all the necessary people to pretend his clothes were good. Many years later he is wracked by guilt at his inaction, he has acheived his fame but at what price ?? On a drunken reunion he confesses to the now director general of the BBC that he's not sure how much longer he can go on living the lie ?? At this point the director general (who by now is a big cheese in the media world and has loads to lose by McQueens flakiness) get's an evil glint in his eye and the camera pans close on his face. Via an elaborate scheme involving a loft hatch and some cleverly positioned electrical cable he manages to make it look like McQueen has topped himself in a "nobody appreciates my art" manner.....seemingly the perfect crime, except for one thing....in his eagerness to keep the BBC at the front of breaking news he prepares McQueens obituary himself a day before the "suicide" then the moment the police are on the threshold of McQueens property he presses SEND and posts it to the BBC website before even the fastest writer in the world could have possibly written it.....so in the end his pride proves to be his undoing. Case closed.

    DeccaQuinne Fri, 12/02/2010 - 01:58
  • Decca, I am sure George has some fantastic gear for you to wear that is just as good as McQueen's range, and you get a staff discount too.
Dont give up your oscar dream just yet, think George not McQueen and dont forget to thank Jesus in your acceptance speech, the yanks love that kind of shit.

    sandyman Fri, 12/02/2010 - 04:02
  • What do you mean by posted for comments? Stories aren't posted specifically to get comments and no-one is forced to comment.
I've not deleted or edited any comments in this thread. People need to take their thumb out of their arse.

    Mr. HM Fri, 12/02/2010 - 07:35

  • Well, this is a celebrity website and he was a celebrity. As sad as all people dying today is, they aren't relevant to this website.

    Mr. HM Fri, 12/02/2010 - 07:39
  • Nothing has been deleted. I'm confused - which part of the news story is misplaced? A celebrity has died - we wrote about it.

    Mr. HM Fri, 12/02/2010 - 07:41
  • Also, not saying you should give a fuck - I was merely pointing out that quite a lot of people do indeed give a fuck.
    You get fucked x

    Mr. HM Fri, 12/02/2010 - 07:42
  • Do you think he was sad because he learned he hadn't won the contract to redesign the NHS backless gown?

Ahhhhhhhh - just been consigned to the flames of hell.

    stella ah trois Fri, 12/02/2010 - 10:29
  • Ah, Mr HM - that is the funniest thing I've read all week.

You know when you post your stories, there's that box underneath headed 'Comments'? What do you think gets posted in there then? Floral tributes?

Can you get someone at HM Towers to film you disappearing up your own fundament and post it on YouTube please, cos I'd like to play it on a loop all day. Hypocritical cunt. No offence x

    merylhighground Fri, 12/02/2010 - 10:29

  • re-read my post "forced to comment".
you aren't obligated to comment on everything. It's there for people to put comments if they feel as though they have something to add. Not for trolls to feel it's their duty to show everyone how amazingly cutting and witty their musings on how best they would run the website.

    Mr. HM Fri, 12/02/2010 - 11:17
  • It annoys me when people say about suicides 'oh how selfish'..it's the act of someone in intense pain. A terrible tragedy and a great loss.

    BettySpencer Fri, 12/02/2010 - 12:02
  • Oh I feel like I've been told off for talking in class or something. How are you by the way MJ, Meryl, Tesco, it's much warmer today don't you think?

    stella ah trois Fri, 12/02/2010 - 13:27
  • Warmer it may be Stella but now it's blimmin well raining.....

    MJwasakiddyfiddler Fri, 12/02/2010 - 13:48
  • It's not selfish at all. Think of the carbon saving. McQueen is just doing his bit for the environment, and we should applaud him.

    sodslaw Fri, 12/02/2010 - 13:50
  • Now we just need to see if we can get Bono and Chris Martin to contribute in a similar fashion.

    sodslaw Fri, 12/02/2010 - 13:51
  • Sort of a "Death Aid" style event ? Finally a cause worth donating too, we could make it like a telethon "Ok folks so we've reached the £2,000,000 mark and you know what that means....that's right we're gonna push The Saturdays into a giant blender !! And remember it doesn't stop there, as soon as we hit the £3,000,000 we'll be feeding Peaches Geldof feet first into an alligator pit" Just think about it....we could probably end world hunger

    MJwasakiddyfiddler Fri, 12/02/2010 - 14:00
  • Blue sky and a few clouds round these parts. i hope it's not headed my way. Going out tonight and don't own an umbrella. Do you think it's set in for the weekend?

    stella ah trois Fri, 12/02/2010 - 14:36
  • What was that programme where they had a big crushing machine and put lots of people's chaotic junk into it? A way forward for your venture I reckon. I can sort of imagine you hosting this... Tesco, you on it?

    stella ah trois Fri, 12/02/2010 - 14:39
  • Fair point on the comments bit- I'm just wondering how many people on here are in full time employment as some individuals feel the need ( but more worringly have the fucking time) to post on every single story, every single posting...

    kermits Fri, 12/02/2010 - 15:10
  • I work in a boring job that pays me well to not do a lot (the joys of bureaucracy), sure I could quit and go and find something more fulfilling but there's a recession on so in the meantime I'll while away the hours however I see fit thankyouverymuch

    MJwasakiddyfiddler Fri, 12/02/2010 - 15:29
  • It's ok not to have a job you know...everyone here claims to be in a highly paid job with not much to do....
    hmm...very credible.

    kermits Fri, 12/02/2010 - 17:33
  • ML- time to clock off at 5pm and go for a beer- I consequently beg you to turn the computer off and not post anything until Monday 9.03am

    kermits Fri, 12/02/2010 - 17:34
  • I'm a student :D

    scatattack Fri, 12/02/2010 - 20:55
  • My best friend committed suicide in 2008. He was a selfish cunt for doing it. He wasn't a celebrity. McQueen was a selfish cunt to do what he did, just before his Mother's funeral too. Fuck him and fuck my friend. Lee McQueen should be in Cunt's Corner...

    dennisnilsen Fri, 12/02/2010 - 21:21

  • I also lost my dad at 7, from a massive heart attack, he was 35. My mum suffered mentally until she died of cancer in 2005. The only way out? Fuck off.

    dennisnilsen Fri, 12/02/2010 - 22:35
  • OK OK, you win orphan boy.

Still stands though that until You are in a position where You are so crippled with mental illness that You can see no other way out; You are not in a position to judge anyone else's reasoning - unhinged as that may be. Your mate, my dad or a celebrity.

PS The Howard Stern act is so passé

    moira_roundabout Fri, 12/02/2010 - 22:54
  • Howard Stern? What the hell are you on about?

    dennisnilsen Fri, 12/02/2010 - 23:12
  • What about guilt, grief, fear of pain, dignity, apology or ,God forbid, honour. You don't need the crutch of mental illness to top yourself, just a good reason.

    tigerstail Sun, 14/02/2010 - 21:26
  • I've waded thru all these abysmal comments to see if anyone's mentioned the one thing that comes to mind about this slob and unless I've missed it (and I *was* glazing over)...

... what about his use of fur in his designs for no reason at all than to achieve spoilt-brat kudos (ie the recognised benchmark for 'success in London')

    Anyway...

Mike Quinoa's is the *one* here:

  • I still cannot believe that he commit suicide to be honest. He was an awesome designer and an inspiration for many people in this world. Sadly that's how life is and nobody can change it because our powers are limited. Many stars died this as well as last year.
