The HorrorsThe Horrors

We’ve just stormed out of the Barclaycard Mercury Prize having learned there were no deep-fried vegetables like last time. No food at all, in fact. What kind of a music awards nomination press conference is that?

Before we left we had a word with two of the less frightening looking members of The Horrors, chiefly because their album is ranked 8-1 by the bookies but we think they’re probably going to win. Here’s what Ghostly Nigel and Spooky Dave had to say:

Tom: The odds were 25 to one, a week ago. I should’ve put a bet on myself as I think it’s a really good album and it does deserve it.
Josh: Why are you gonna bet on yourself? I don’t understand why people are talking about betting on our album. Have a day at the dogs! It’s much more fun.
Tom: But when you do win, it’s a double win.
Josh: No. Don’t bet on music. Bet on the dogs. My uncle taught me a system once, and it’s foolproof. I can’t really tell you it, but it is foolproof.

Tom: To be honest, I haven’t actually heard any of the albums that are nominated. There’s so much music out there and I’m working my way forwards from the start. I’m at 1989 at the moment so none of these albums are on my radar. But I think Bat For Lashes will win. She’s been in it before and if this is the year of the female solo artist then at least it should go to someone who really put the work in. I think it’s a lot more her record, as well.

The Horrors in controversial subtle dig at the Florence & the Machine record there. Possibly. You read it here first.

  • What the hell is up with most of these comments? The Horrors are amazing and if you don't like them, why comment? Why be so shallow as to judge them by how they look as well? They have made the best record of the year and have come really far in their career. They really do deserve to win. Good luck to them (:

  • And they're always so spot on too. I mean, look at the huge success that came Talvin Singh's way, and that M People album is a classic.

  • The Mercury awards seem to celebrate cunty bands that have been around for roughly 5 minutes in the music business.
