But Jack, can't you tell that she loves you
Dammit Chloe
Tue, 09/11/2010 - 17:45 by Harry BowTo mark the release 24, Season 8 on DVD and Blu-ray, HM met Mary Lynn Rajsku, otherwise known as everyone's favourite socially awkward intelligence analyst, Chloe O'Brian... We weren't allowed to break protocol by asking any questions about Kiefer Sutherland, but she could've hacked into this site within about 1.5 seconds anyway...
HM: Hello Mary-Lynn/Chloe... You get the last line of the last ever episode of 24 – “shut it down [, bitches]” – can you remember your first one?
Mary-Lynn: I remember my first scene - it was back when Kiefer was hooked on heroin and he was in his office and I had to bring him something and he sort of just barked at me. That day I completely blanked on my lines. I’ve come along way since them…
HM: Yeah, how is it that Chloe has outlived so many other people?
Mary-Lynn: I’m not sure why that is, but there have been a few close calls. There was one time when I went to put a key in a lock and it turned out that there was a car bomb…
HM: Which has been the most tear-jerking farewell? Edgar, surely?
Mary-Lynn: That was straight up sad because he was so innocent and didn’t do anything, whereas with Jack it’s all so complicated and you sort of expect that from him…
HM: Chloe is in love with Jack, though, isn’t she?
Mary-Lynn: I think the audience definitely created that more than it was there, but at the same time I think it’s rightfully so because she’s so loyal to him and there has to be a reason for that after a certain point in time. She goes to such extremes measures, she wants to be like him, she admires him, and, on some level – I think – she does have feelings for him. Please don’t tell Morris.
HM: Talking of loyalty, have you seen the 24 Top Trumps that was created after series four? Chloe has 38/50 for power, 5/10 for loyalty to cause, 67/100 for cunningness and 18/24 for 24 factor. Surely that’s not right…
Mary-Lynn: Only 5/10 for loyalty? That’s not right at all. That’s what is exciting about this character – people didn’t like me at first. I though ‘this is a fun job and it will be over soon', but it just kept growing…
HM: Yeah, those one-liners…
Mary-Lynn: I those her little comments and the rude things that she says - I think the writers had fun giving me that stuff to say because the show is so serious.
HM: The beauty of Chloe is that she would be entertaining in any situation – whether she was an intelligence analyst or a hotelier. Surely there’s room for a spin-off, but what would the plot be?
Mary-Lynn: It would be interesting to just see her become a mum, or in the same vein, maybe being a boss… I liked having her in charge – I think that could bring out some of her worst qualities, which would be her most fun qualities - her having to teach people or impart information, which is fun because you know that’s not going to go well.
HM: Still, she must’ve had the patience of a saint to train Kim up to work in CTU...
Mary-Lynn: I think I resented her, sure. A bit of nepotism there.
HM: And working with Dana, which reminds us – SPOILER ALERT – that body that she hid in a cupboard in the meeting room, it’s been concerning us. How long before it gets discovered? It’s gonna start whiffing during a powerpoint presentation, isn’t it…?
Mary-Lynn: That made me laugh out loud. Poor Dana. I loved that. Sticking him in there. That’s the beauty of 24 – it’s one day and you don’t need to explain anything, although someone needs to get the body out of there...
HM: Maybe it will be covered in the film version? Any developments?
Mary-Lynn: There are no developments that I know about with the 24 film.. Personally, I’m developing some comedy stuff. I think I’ll do something completely different, but I’ll always have that certain quality that draws from my own personality…
HM: Good, we love it. Thanks, Mary-Lynn/Chloe. Give us just one final disapproving look please, even if it doesn’t translate in text… That's it!
