Paul Blart: Mall Cop on DVD – Out now

There’s quite a funny bit in ‘Paul Blart: Mall Cop’ where the titular security officer dives behind a pillar in order to evade the terrorists he is attempting to thwart, only to stop sliding several feet short of the pillar itself.

In this instance, humour is derived from our existing knowledge of the protagonist’s excessive weight, which the audience can identify as the cause of his failed maneuver. Further comedy is evoked in the juxtaposition of this unsuccessful exercise with the conventions of modern action cinema, whose reliance on quick cuts and seemingly impossible feats of strength and agility is held up to ridicule by the scene.

Luckily they put that bit in the trailer, so I wouldn’t bother with the rest of the movie.

Extras: They haven’t included the trailer, presumably because they know that no one would bother with the full-length movie if given the option. There’s a commentary though.

2 more funny bits that I didn’t mention above, but bear in mind it’s a 91 minute movie so that’s still only one funny bit every half hour, out of 5

  • This is the equivalent of going in a pub, walking up to a group of complete strangers and shouting "Don't watch Kung Fu Panda - yeah?!"

  • Humour derived from being fat. Horne and Corden should see if there's something in that.
