The Invention of Lying

It's always quite hard to tell whether Ricky Gervais is genuinely a massively arrogant prat, or whether he just acts like that to try and seem funny. We can't fault his technique though; surround yourself with people even stranger than you (sorry Stephen), and then you'll seem fascinating and hilarious in comparison.

Unfortunately for Ricky, what he doesn't seem to realise is that people enjoy watching him because he's the character that everyone actually looks down upon, not his pals.

So when he starts taking himself seriously in public, that's when you realise he's pulled a Kanye. He did exactly this when he recently spoke to the press about his upcoming Golden Globes hosting gig:

"For the first years of being famous I was scared of using the word 'art' because I thought it was pretentious.

"But now I think it's my responsibility to consider myself an artist because that's why I'm doing it and it's being honest. I can't apologise for that.

"Art, TV, furniture making, most tables are rubbish.

"But when you see a really brilliant table that the guy spent four years making and he was a master craftsman and it's lasted 700 years, you want to cry. It brings a lump to your throat.

"And, yes. I want to bring a lump to your throat."

So basically, he thinks he's so funny people will be laughing at his comedy in 700 years, and also, he cries when he sees tables. We would especially like to repeat this sentence though, as we think it really stands out:

Art, TV, furniture making, most tables are rubbish.

Never a truer word said, Ricky.
