A Certain(ly dead) Romance
Sun, 31/07/2011 - 11:05 byWhat is it with all the doom and gloom in the news at the moment? Has someone murdered happiness? Today we regret to inform you that Alexa Chung and Alex Turner have split up after four wonderful years as King and Queen of Cool. This news is sure to come as a crushing blow to the indie world, a world which the couple set alight by uniting in the name of all things quirky back in 2007. But there's no need to worry, because newly engaged couple, Marcus Mumford and Carey Mulligan are surely the perfect fit to take over their mantle. Aren't they, guys?
There is some slight solace you can take from this heart-breaking tale, as we are led to believe that there was no messy end to their relationship, and that the split was completely amicable. Hmm, yeah, that old chesnut.
Still, we were sure they were meant to be. We mean, they (sort of) had the same first name and everything! Yet a source, whose closest connection to the couple is probably that they own Alexa's Mulberry bag and know all the words to Mardy Bum, told the Sunday Mirror:
"Things haven't been going well and they haven't seemed like a couple for the past few weeks. At Glastonbury festival, they barely said a word to each other.
They really wanted to give it a go to hold it together and seemed to be getting back on track - but things got bad again and they both decided enough was enough. They want to stay friends so it's best to split now. They've been through a lot together and all their friends are sad they've called time as a couple.
Alexa and Alex both wanted things to work. It was best that they both got out now and saved their friendship."
The best bit of that quote is when they say 'at Glastonbury festival'. We don't know why. It just sounds ridiculous.
Anyway, Chung's spokeswoman, Liz Matthews, has since confirmed the sad news, announcing:
"It's completely amicable - but yes it's true. They have split."
