When you’re a hard-living hunk of man like Colin Farrell, and you want to give up a nicotine addiction, you don’t turn to nicotine patches and NHS Quitline, you shut yourself in with your beloved cigarettes, write them a letter, and then get on with things.

Colin has told Shortlist magazine that that is exactly how he quit smoking:

“I did it the Sunday before I turned 34. I spent the whole day with a packet of cigarettes. I didn't really see anyone and with every cigarette I smoked, I smoked with as much awareness as I could. And then I wrote a little letter to tobacco.

“… 'I remember the first time we met and all that we've been through together. That time you helped me through such-and-such a situation...' and yada-yadda.

“It was very much the kind of letter you'd write to a person you were breaking up with. Because that's what it was - a break-up. It was the first time I'd ever broken up via letter, so it was strange.”

Now, aside from the fact that we would love a break-up letter from Colin Farrell, because that would mean we had gotten to do it with him at some point along the line, we must doff our caps to him. It’s not easy giving up an addiction: our Percy Pigs habit is getting seriously out of control, we're up to a whole bag a day!

Colin also said he had no regrets over giving up drinking:

“If I did miss those days, the chances are I wouldn't have stuck with what I've been doing for the past six years and I wouldn't be having so much fun, creatively and personally.”

That’s right, if he hadn’t quit drinking, he might still be making movies like Alexander and Daredevil.
