Awww, she’s growing up so fast!

Tavi Gevinson first shot to fame three years ago, when everyone was all like “who’s this 12 year old fashion maven, and why is she getting VIP entry to Fashion Week events?” and she’s still pretty much just doing her thing, blogging her cute little heart out, and proving that not all teenagers are douchebags. And she’s started her own online magazine, Rookie.

Rookie is basically a web-based version of a cool fashion ‘zine, created by Tavi (editor-in-chief) and an army of too-cool-for-school bloggers and hip young things. It is updated three times a day, five days a week, with articles covering fashion, sex, and LIFE.

While it may be a little young for our tastes (we are all very old and wise) we wish something like Rookie had been around when we were teens, giving decent fashion advice and speaking to us in a language we understood, daddio (see: old).

Rookie is basically an anti-handbook for teens who perhaps don’t fit into the life and fashion moulds that Topshop decides. Tavi puts it much better, in her first editor’s letter:

“Rookie is not your guide to Being a Teen. It is not a pamphlet on How to Be a Young Woman. (If it were, it would be published by American Girl and your aunt would’ve given it to you in the fifth grade.) It is, quite simply, a bunch of writing and art we like and believe in. While there’s always danger in generalizing a whole group of people, I do think some experiences are somewhat universal to being a teenager, specifically a female one. Rookie is a place to make the best of the beautiful pain and cringe-worthy awkwardness of being an adolescent girl.”

Straight up, we love Tavi, and we’ll be following Rookie for more top tips and snarky wit. We just wish we’d been that cool at 15, instead of hanging on to that awful fringe and ill-advised goth phase.
