Oscar de la Renta made his name creating opulent, ladylike confections from enough tulle and chiffon to sink a ship, and while these beautiful behemoths are in attendance in his A/W ’12 collection, there is also a very pleasing Jackie O influence running throughout, in the shape of classy twinsets, boucle skirt suits and slightly funnelled boat necked shifts. Oh, and the adorable faux-bobs (fobs? fauxbs?) sported by the models, erring just on the right side of kitschy.

While we adore the big frocks (seriously, we’d happily get married in the stormy blue and grey one, hang tradition!) our real love is going to the teal dress that looks like it’s constructed from hundreds of little woven flowers. Truly a work of art, and it actually looks like the kind of dress that would look better on a curvier girl than your average catwalk girl. It’s wearable and special in the same breath and we can’t applaud it enough. We also love the flapper-inspired fringing on some of the more ‘easy’ dresses, and the tweedy coatigan is seriously lustable.

This collection is a triumph for de la Renta, and we have found, in that dress, one of our favourite items of the whole season.
