Films, but ones that you haven't seen
Fri, 15/07/2011 - 16:56 by Peter MeehanY'know the Strongbow ads where 'real' men with 'real' jobs like plumbers or insulation fitters are rewarded for all their hard, manly work at the end of the day with a crisp pint of cider...well what about the people who sit down at computers all day looking for celebrity gossip? Do we not deserve cider? Well, we don't really like cider anyway, so it doesn't matter.
But we don't really mind films, and looking at film trailers, imagining how good the films will be from the trailer. So here's four trailers for films coming out between now and the end of time: The Thing, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, Hugo and Creature, watch them and enjoy them because they all look like they might be good (except Hugo, which looks like it might be very bad).
The Thing
Many people don't know John Carpenter's 1982 The Thing was a remake of The Thing from Another World from 1951; but it was, so there.
Dutch director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. reimagines the isolated suspicion and fear of the originals. Will he make a balls up of it? It doesn't look so, but it's still probably not going to be better than the 1982 version.
The Pirates! Band of Misfits
Nick Park is wonderful isn't he? He made all those Wallace and Gromit things, Creature Comforts and Chicken Run. Now he's made a film about pirates. The Pirates! Band of Misfits has current truth crusader Hugh Grant, as well as Salma Hayek, Jeremy Piven and David Tennant amongst others. One of those 'fun for all the ages' and very funny, which is what we've come to expect from Aardman animations. Best Nick Park production yet?
Hugo
The trailer for Hugo doesn't appear to give very much away, it's about a young boy who repeatedly runs away from a clumsy Borat while some fantastic things threaten to happen but don't. On further research, it's about a boy who lives in a train station and searches for a secret about his recently deceased father. If the trailer is a reflection of the film (which they're certainly supposed to be), this looks like it's going to be a long story of nothing much happening except Borat falling over, and we saw that, in Borat.
Creature
When a group of young, attractive people on a road trip (do ugly Americans go on road trips too?) stop at a convenience store, they hear a rumour about a creature who is half man, half alligator. So, as most young, attractive people do on a road trip do, they decide to go and investigate. Unsurprisingly, the creature comes along and ruins their night. By the looks of things, Creature could be a fun fright-fest, and not just because movie posters' love alliteration.
