Drama, actually

Whether you're on a date or not, no one wants to see a rom-com on Valentine's Day - they only serve to demonstrate how you've failed in your sad lonely/unimaginative life. As we pointed out in last week's review of The Vow, Channing Tatum loves Rachel McAdams so very much he organises a romantic game of 'chocolate roulettes for her'. Have you done that for your love? No, didn't think so. You shouldn't either - it's wasteful.

So, what CAN you see that won't leave you wanting to slap Tatum around with a £5.50 hotdog? Maybe ones of these, out now on general release...

Big Miracle
Drew Barrymore is the girl every man wants to date and every woman wants to befriend, while John Kransinki is pretty much her male equivalent, so they're a nice pair to spend 14 Feb with. While this film should probably be called Big Effort, it's a nice heartwarming tale about a community coming together to save a family of gray whales trapped by rapidly forming ice in the Arctic Circle. It's based on true events, so you can't be too cynical. Plus it's got Ted Danson in it, which is always a very good thing.

Jack and Jill
Adam Sandler as both Jack and Jill. Seriously, could there be a more anti Valentine's film? If you want to find a way of making your partner dump you, this is your ticket. Literally.

Young Adult
As you'll have read in our review, Young Adult is very dark and really quite unromantic. If you're a woman, your boyfriend will appreciate you more after a viewing just because you're not as freakin' mental as Charlize Theron.

The Muppets
There's no such thing as a bad Muppets film, by virtue of the fact that a Muppet is intrinsically funny.

Alternatively, just rent Drive - out now on DVD/Blue-ray. There's Ryan Gosling for her and Ryan Gosling for him. Win win.

Or there's also Crazy Stupid Love - out now on DVD/Blue-ray. There's Ryan Gosling for her and Ryan Gosling for him. Win win.

Happy Valentine's.
