The great Miss Bala
Diaries out...
Fri, 28/10/2011 - 17:27 by Gemma ExleyLadies and gentleman, the London Film Festival has left the building. However, in a unique twist, all of the titles that screened at it are actually going to be shown AGAIN, at another time, in another cinema, probably much nearer to where you live (maybe cheaper too). That's right, you didn't miss out after all - phew.
Out of the more than two hundred films that screened at the marvellous London Film Festival this year, we manage to catch, erm, slightly less than ten per cent... Look, we wanted to watch that Albanian horror but we ended up being busy with something else that day. We still think we chose quite well so are proud to present our top ten films (that we saw) from the festival.
Miss Bala, out now!
A pleasingly understated thriller that follows a few days in the life of Laura (the beautiful Stephanie Sigma), a poor Tijuana salesgirl whose dreams of winning the local beauty pageant get thrown off kilter by pesky local drug gang. It makes Bad Boys look like a panto and will definitely give you your cartel fix if you're missing Break Bad. Go see it (www.facebook.com/MissBalaUK).
Ides of March, out now!
Multi-tasker George Clooney directs and appears alongside Ryan Gosling, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti and Evan Rachel Wood in this uber-smart tale of dirty politics during the presidential primary. Great performances from all.
50/50, released 25 November 2011
Inspired by writer Will Reiser's own experiences (which, BTW, he experience whilst working on Da Ali G Show), this is a surprisingly touching story of friendship that sees Seth Rogan back at his best and Joseph Gordon Levitt breaking through as a bonafide box office lead.
Trishna, released 15 December 2011
You never know what to expect with Michael Winterbottom, a director who has The Trip, 24 Hour Party People, A Mighty Heart and Geneva on his CV, but his adaptation of Tess of the d'Urbervilles is beautiful and finds an instant home in India with Freida Pinto as the tragic heroine and Four Lion's Riz Ahmed as the love interest.
Shame, released 13 January 2012
Steve McQueen's insightful study of a New York man's sexual compulsion, with incredibly powerful performances from Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan. Both get completely naked, FYI.
Descendants, released 27 January 2012
Alexander Payne's first feature since Sideways sees George Clooney playing a father forced to reconnect with his children after his wife is involved in an accident. Quite brilliant, particularly the performance from the young Shailene Woodley.
Like Crazy, released 3 February 2012
Remember that hammy C4 show NyLon? Well this is a much superior look at the perils of transatlantic relationships that puts Felicity Jones in the spotlight as one of the UK's brightest rising stars. Almost too real.
Wild Bill, released February 2012
Dexter Fletcher's directorial debut follows the tale of Bill Hayward, a paroled ex-con who's forced to reconnect with his two young boys after discovering they've been living on their own. With the London Olympics building site as the backdrop, this could be yet another gritty film about urban life, but it has incredible heart and amazing casting - Charlie Creed-Miles, Will Poulter and Sammy Williams star. Nice one, Dexter.

Dreams of a Life, no release date yet so cross your fingers
The fascinating yet heartbreaking story of a woman, Joyce Carol Vincent, whose body was discovered in her London flat three years after her death. Carol Morley's documentary interweaves interviews with Vincent's former friends (she did actually have a few) and reenactments (an almost unrecognisable Vod from Fresh Meat).

Rampart, no release date yet so cross your fingers
Woody's back back BACK and looking better than ever as a dirty but charismatic cop in 1990s Los Angeles. The brilliant crime movie sees the actor reunited with The Messenger director Oren Moverman.
