Better than Two and a Half Men

If you haven't seen It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, you should. It's one of the best new (relatively speaking) comedies around at the moment, and it's inexplicable why it's taken so long to arrive here in the UK from the US, where it's just about to start its seventh season. The yanks are probably starting to think this side of the Atlantic no longer enjoys laughing, instead preferring to watch the flavourless pap that Chuck Lorre seems to spurt out with such abandon, yes we're talking about you, Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory. Oh, nerds! You're just so very very funny, with your unusual ways! Awful. Really, really awful.

Anyway, back to IASIP, the show's basically about four sociopaths who run a bar in downtown Philadelphia and get into hilarious (honestly) scrapes. Dennis (Glenn Howerton) and his sister Dee (Kaitlin Olson) are joined by Mack (Rob McElhenney, the show's creator) and Charlie (Charlie Day) as they attempt to make the bar a success, despite all being fairly stupid and unbelievably selfish. They try to sell Nazi memorabilia, get addicted to crack, lie about having cancer, shoot each other by accident and serve underage children before trying to go to the prom with them. Great stuff.

If you had to compare it to anything, you'd probably say IASIP was a bit like Curb Your Enthusiasm in the way all the main characters have no filter on what they do and say, except there are four of them here rather than just one, and they are all so obnoxious they don't really have any straight men to play off, instead using each other to generate the jokes. It works.

Having watched upto the sixth series via the magic of the internet we can assure you that this is not a programme that disappoints, getting better with each series, again why it's such a surprise that it's taken so long for it to be adopted over here in the UK. Series two has Danny DeVito in as Dee and Dennis' father, and is actually where the whole thing really takes off, although that's not to say series one isn't great.

The only problem with IASIP is that sometimes the humour can be a bit crass and tasteless, which is right up our alley (as you may have guessed) but may not be for everyone. Also, if you enjoy The Big Bang Theory there is nothing that can be done for you. Not entirely relevant, but it needed to be said.

Seriously, watch this series. You won't regret it*

*And before you ask, no we're not being paid, you cynical rascals. Plus, Modern Family is another wonderful programme that we may have forgotten about when we wrote the article. May have.
