World Cup Balls

Under cloudless skies, Fabio Capello oversaw England's first World Cup training session this morning in Rustenburg - and GM has the best pics (see above). Gareth Barry took part, as did perennial sicknote Ledley King. Indeed, the only player to sit out was goalkeeper David James, who did some gym work on his own. Loser.

The big news saw skipper Rio Ferdinand limp out with a knee injury. He went to the nearest hospital for a scan. More when we have it.

Still, it's top news for Capello that Barry is so far along the road to fitness, as the Man City midfielder holds the key to England's ideal formation: Barry and Frank Lampard as holding midfielders, with Steven Gerrard unleashed further forward, alongside Joe Cole and Aaron Lennon, and just behind Wayne Rooney.

England's remote training camp is patrolled 24/7 by armed police on horseback. Unnerving.
