Who needs friends when you can talk to your phone?

The iPhone 5 is set to be released at the end of September, which gives us three days. Or more likely, it'll be released in October, or November, or some time after that. As the date creeps even closer, some details about the spec and the new voice assistant on the iPhone 5 have been released by 9to5Mac.

The Voice Control function, around since the iPhone 3GS, is set to be ramped up to ridiculousness in the iPhone 5 after Apple's purchase of Siri, the personal assistant application, which will provide a voice-navigation system for the new handset.

Holding down the home button will bring up the microphone interface and the user then talks into their phone to do any manner of tasks within the phone, including setting up meetings, leaving reminders or finding directions using GPS.

The Siri-based system will also hold 'conversations' with the user to gain the most information for the best results. Soon you'll just spend all your time talking to your phone, rather than to the people on the other end.

This opens the doors for the possibility of sending voice-to-text text messages, which according to Apple are extremely quick and accurate, but possibly haven't been tested on some of the more incomprehensible accents. Hopefully this means we'll finally be able to do those 'dictated not read' messages we've always wanted to send out, absolving us of all culpability.

The other specifications which will have Apple fanboys and tech experts frothing at the mouth while everyone else says: "well, that sounds good" are: a dual-core A5 processor, 1GB of RAM and an eight megapixel camera. The iPhone 5 may also contain Qualcomm Gobi Baseband chips to allow it to operate on both GSM and CDMA networks.

Dosen't that all sound impressive?
