The Futureheads - not playingThe Futureheads - not playing

Or, for younger readers, The Magnets to sue

It’s getting tough for the UK's top indie groups to make a living. We’re pretty sure we saw Peanut from the Kaiser Chiefs eating out of our bin, the other day. And it seems that Sunderland’s The Futureheads are so hard up they’ve had to sell their instruments to Cash Converters and record the whole of their new album a capella. No, of course not. Except the last bit. That bit’s true.

The Futureheads fifth album (fifth?!) is to be called Rant and it features no instruments at all, except the vocal larynx. So you could say that there is one instrument on the new The Futureheads album: an organ. An organ of the body! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Funny.

But seriously, they really have made an album that’s just singing. Why they do that?

Well, singer and no-longer-guitarist Barry Hyde says: “The Futureheads have been together for a long time now. And we have the right to do something different.”

There’s no arguing with that.

And in case you’re thinking, ‘I don’t like the idea of that’, Barry has some stern words:

“A Futureheads fan who doesn’t get 'Rant' is not a Futureheads fan. This version of The Futureheads has always been there. We’re bringing to the fore what we’re really about: a unification, a gang mentality, which is in the balance between our voices and our personalities. And on Rant we’re pushing that right into your face.”

The Futureheads – Rant is released on April 2. Touring it is going to be well cheap.

Here’s the tracklisting:

1. Meantime

2. Meet Me Halfway (The Black Eyed Peas cover)

3. Robot

4. Beeswing (Richard Thompson cover)

5. Thursday

6. Sumer Is Icumen In (Traditional)

7. The Keeper (Traditional)

8. The No. 1 Song in Heaven (Sparks cover)

9. The Old Dun Cow (Traditional)

10. Acapella (Kelis cover)

11. Man Ray

Bonus: Heartbeat Song (Digital only)

Crikey.

Here’s a song from it. Listen to their voices pushed right into your face…
