PJ Harvey thrilled at her double win. War is bad.
PJ Harvey becomes the first person to win twice
Wed, 07/09/2011 - 10:23 by Tim ChippingWe were quite literally at the Barclaycard Mercury Music Prize last night. We might still be there, for all we know. We're certainly still wearing the same clothes. Oh and Dear. As you know by now, PJ Harvey won for her album all about war and stuff, as was predicted (we'd like to thank Paddy Power for giving her quite decent odds at the start. Kerching!) making her the only person ever to win the award twice. Which is nice.
We'd love to tell you it was scandal filled but it really wasn't. And it seemed like only Metronomy, Everything Everything (who put in the second best performance of the night) and Ghostpoet (who put in the best performance of the night and was a bit of a revelation) wanted to stay and do drunk dancing.
We may have insulted Corinne Bailey Rae unintentionally for a second year running when we were actually trying to apologise for the last time. And with hindsight we probably seemed a bit creepy asking to take a picture of her shoes but they were fucking incredible shoes and we completely love her and can't wait for the next album. Please pass that message on, if you see her.
We got a bit overexcited when we saw Wretch 32 for the third time in a month. He's our new popstar friend whether he likes it or not.
And we peaked early when, before the ceremony started, we overheard Elbow's Guy Garvey discussing urinal ettiquette, vis-Ă -vis what to say if the pissee next to you is splashing back. Guy thinks you should always tell them. Good advice. And his speech was lovely, in a drunk-too-much-but-who-cares way.
The other great speech came from Adele who, due to a tour-cancelling throat infection couldn't perform, but instead sat as if mortified while we all watched her singing Rolling In The Deep (which is still amazing, even after the overkill) from when she was on Later... with Jools Holland. But her laugh when she croaked her speech had a similar affect on the audience as the end of It's A Wonderful Life: a warm fuzzy glow which, for a few moments, convinced the recording industry that everything was going to be all right.
See you next year, Barclaycard Mercury Music Prize. And sorry for anything we may have done or said, after about 11pm.
Thanks to www.absoluteradio.co.uk for the video. We don't know where we were by this point.
