Let's Go Lazy
Mon, 04/07/2011 - 12:09 by Mr. HM

First time at Hop Farm Festival - not the last though. Perfect size, not full of Beady Eye fans, near London, not full of twats, good grub, not full of Kasabian fans. Nice bogs. But as i've discovered to my delight this morning there are two things you can't do when talking about Prince for fear of being the only person marching in time - either say he was "OK" or even worse "dull". Be warned - twitter doesn't like people that don't like Prince.

Problem is, I fucking LOVE Prince. This was my 6th Prince gig, 'Sometimes It Snows In April' is being played at my funeral and the lines "I guess I shoulda closed my eyes when you drove me to the place where your horses run free - Cos I felt a little ill when I saw all the pictures of the jockeys that were there before me" is one of the greatest lyrical metaphors for boning there will ever be.

But this gig was lacking. Not in his energy or even humour (asking fans to give Sinead O'Connor a break after singing 'Nothing Compares 2 U' ("Aww come on guys - that song bought me a HOUSE"), but he just misjudged the night. 45 minutes late, followed by a 22 minute soundcheck jam, 30 seconds of standing motionless before we FINALLY got the "Dearly Beloved, we are gathered here…" line.

This was a headline slot at a festival, not a residency where he could afford to be indulgent. His obsession with reminding us that this was "real music" played by "real musicians" was grating and odd, considering Prince is one of the pioneers of sampling, drum machines and studio techniques.

I reckon at least 50% of the entire 2 1/4 hour set was made up of "jams" and everybody shouting chants all loosely based around us all liking/wanting/dancing to funky music. This is not what made Sign O' The Times one of the top 3 albums of all time.

Watching Prince cover Wild Cherry's "Play That Funky Music White Boy", itself a shit pastiche on Sly and The Family stone was massively rubbish, as were the 4 encores, including a 20 minute song with Sly Bassist Larry Graham.

Don't get me wrong - there were moments of heart-stopping amazingness. Kiss was incredible, the guy is 53 and dances like a 12 year old ballerina and 1999 was re-invigorated after years as being the party piece.

Walking away from the gig I moaned that he hadn't played the hits, but actually he did - he played pretty much every single bloody one from the non-sweary eras, which sadly means nothing from Diamond and Pearls (He's now a Jehovah Witness and has erased all his sexy back catalogue from his silly brain) - but they were drowned in a flood of big, gloomy jam.

  • @mrm he is totally calling you fat suggesting you could wear a t-shirt with such an improbably long slogan, don't stand for that from a HALF-ARSED prince fan who CAN'T EVEN BE BOTHERED to go to all 342 prince CONCERTS in western EUROPE before making his mind up about WHETHER he should enjoy a SHOW.

  • @mrm Hi! Congrats to you for being a bigger Prince fan than me etc, but tbh I stand by a lot of what I said. The gig at Hop Farm was incomparable to the O2 shows. Believe it or not, Prince was not playing to his crowd on Sunday night and I felt, as a member of the audience, that he could have done a much better gig had he not filled half the gig with un-necessary filler - this happened in EVERY song.

By sweary, i merely suggested that his religious beliefs are compromising his song choices. No Gett Off? no Insatiable? No Head? No Hot Thing? No I wanna Be your Lover?

Now I wasn't sat there with a stopwatch so you may well be correct in your timings, for which I apologise - but to me 3 minutes spent having to shout the word "Funky" honestly felt like 20.

Having only seen 6 shows I'm not aware that every show is a party - both the O2 and the old Maine Road gigs were far from parties - they were amazing gigs which played to their strengths and didn't spend too long indulging themselves in needless twaddle.

I am wearing a cap saying Mr. Cunt today - can I suggest you wear a T Shirt saying "I NEED TO GET OVER MY SELF-RIGHTEOUS INDIGNATION REGARDING THINGS I DON'T AGREE WITH".

    Love, Mr. HM

  • @mrm How come all your responses are assumptions mixed with thinly veiled insults? "You obviously can't read". How is that meant to work? If I couldn't read I wouldn't be able to read that you'd written that and I'd be none the wiser. If I can read then, well, it's not going to bother me is it? It just doesn't work on any level. It's just silly. I can obviously read. I may have misunderstood what you wrote. But that might be your fault for not being clearer. It might be no one's fault and just one of the common problems we all face with communication. Why so aggressive?

"I'm not happy that he wrote crap"

Why? Why are you not happy? What does it change? Will Prince sell less gig tickets? Will he lose money? Will you be in some way hurt? No. So why do you care? It doesn't matter, does it? Let it go.

"I`m going to take him to task."

This is laudable, and you should. But you completely undermine your points when you come at it like a mental fanboy, hurling assumptions and insults. It just makes you seem like a loony. You could have very calmly and politely said:
"Hi, I was at the same gig and I think you got a few details wrong." Then list those details. Then say, "I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it as much as the gigs you've seen before. I did enjoy it and here's why..."
Then we'd think, hey what a cool guy. He's shared his opinion and his knowledge. Brilliant.
Instead we think, uh oh. Sound the fanboy lunatic alarm. And you brought that all on yourself.

"I am also of an age where the trendy twats in London who reckon they know about music and don`t irritate me."

Well I'm not sure who that refers to. Mr HM is from Derby, I'm from Dorset, we're not remotely trendy and we're both quite old. You need to give it up with the assumptions and the insults. They're just not working for you.

You obviously can`t read !I`m quite happy for him not to have enjoyed the show.
    I`m not happy that he wrote crap;
    - the opening song wasn`t 20 minutes
    - "nothing from his sweary phase" they all were
    - 20 minute song with LG was actually 3 songs
    - nothing from Diamonds and Pearls - Cream wasn`t on that album then
    - too many jams and chants - surely audience participation is the name of the game at a festival - Mr.HM clearly wanted a passive crowd possibly stroking their chins or navel gazing.

Being a fan is not defined by the number of concerts you attend but to boast what a massive fan you are after seeing 6 as Mr.HM does is laughable , Prince has done over 100 shows in the UK and that excludes the aftershows.
If he has seen 6 concerts he would know that they are always a party , there are always covers and different arrangements of familiar songs.
If I want to read badly researched and written reviews I can read a tabloid, but when I read one written by someone who runs a website that amongst other things takes the piss out of the kind of crap that tabloids print then I`m going to take him to task.
As for me happy to be a freak - I know what I like and If I express an opinion it is factual and not made up.
I am also of an age where the trendy twats in London who reckon they know about music and don`t irritate me.
I`m sure I`ll get over it though

  • I was at the Hop Farm yesterday and yes we were kept waiting by his Royal Purpleness( so did all the other acts , not just as long), soundcheck was necessary as Larry Graham was hardly audible when he performed. I am a 46 year old mother and i have been following PRINCE since i heard his FOR YOU album when i was 11 or 12 years old, and i will be a fan forever. Listen , i am not getting into a slanging match here but PRINCE IS THE KING.!! NOTHING OR NO ONE CAN EVER COMPARE TO HIM. I saw him in Wembley over 20 years ago, i saw him at the O2 a few years back and he delivers time and time again. He is simply the best. Don't forget this is an artiste who really does not favour commercial success over his creativity and all i can say is i will continue to support and enjoy his music. He is truly an entertainer, playing REAL MUSIC for real fans. Long may his purple reign continue.

  • @mrm You might be right, he might not have been there. Or, and here's a revolutionary thought, a review is an entirely subjective account. And no two people see the the same show, feel the same way about it or even remember the details the same way. And since it's probably the latter that's the case here, wetting your pants about the nature of subjectivity is somewhat futile, don't you think? What can be done about it? Can we reverse time and you can stand next to him and tell him everything he should be noticing and thinking? Or could you maybe just carry on enjoying Prince your way and leave other people to enjoy him (or not) their way? Because your current stance (Yes, no one is a Prince fan unless they've gone to all 36 O2 shows - that's definitely how it works) makes you sound like a bit of a freak. And not in the funky sense of the word, either.

  • You obviously weren`t there ! Did you write your review by following twitter feeds ?

You reckon you know and love Prince having seen 6 concerts (he did 36 shows at the O2 in 2007) - you really are having a laugh!
The opening track which he used as a soundcheck lasted five or 6 minutes if you had heard the sound from the earlier acts you would have realised that it was entirely necessary , the sound following this was superb.
The 20 minute song with Larry Graham was actually 3 songs - Everyday People , Come Together (by a band called the Beatles) and I Wanna Take You Higher , well judged and well received - something for the older people in the crowd.

You really don`t know very much about music do you ?
His studio albums have always been at the forefront of technology , but the challenge surely is to recreate this in a live setting without the drum machines and samples which does mean a slightly different arrangement to the album version and this is what makes a Prince concert special.

I didn`t go to Glastonbury but I did watch U2 and Coldplay who are apparently the biggest live draws in the world - I might as well have played their CD`s , this must be the type of performance you like.

If you were there last night you would know that there wasn`t anything in his setlist that people wouldn`t know even the cover of Sylvester`s Disco Heat or Bob Dylan`s Make You Feel My Love. It was perfectly pitched for the whole crowd , not just his die-hards and as usual he had the whole audience in the palm of his hand. Outside of the covers everything he played was a hit , including Cream off the Diamonds and Pearls album ! Your so-called sweary era surely ran from 1978 to the mid-nineties , he played nothing later than Cream which was 1991 apart from the opening number which is a new unreleased song called "We Live To Get Funky"

I don`t object to you not enjoying it , that is your opinion what I do object to is making things up which just show how shallow your knowledge of music is.
I reckon you got a freebie ticket from the promoter and couldn`t be arsed to go (the lure of something like Heartbeat on TV was probably too great for you)so you looked at Twitter and other websites and wrote a review based around this.

You should change your name from Mr.HM to Nathan Barley or simply Mr.Cunt !

    mrm Mon, 04/07/2011 - 16:15
  • Doesn't sound like you've seen him much in the last 10 years, because funk-heavy "real music" shows are what he's been doing for a while now.

Agree that 2 bars of Larry Graham playing is 2 bars too many, but I doubt a 7 minute piano and acoustic guitar ballad is really what the closing night of a festival is looking for. And would Diamonds & Pearls-era shitty rapping really have been better? Also, getting purple rain and if I was ur girlfriend live would instantly make it the best show of the weekend. Imagine that might be where the mental tweeters are coming from - if you think Prince was only "ok", I'd be struggling to find an adjective to describe the crapness of eliza doolittle.
