So the Pet Shop Boys have scored a new ballet, based on a Hans Christian Anderson story. Which is nice. And we just got sent the album of that score today. And rather than listen to it for a while and formulate our considered opinions, we've tossed off the very first things that came into our head about it. It's what they would've wanted.

As it turns out, not all Pet Shop Boys records sound the same. At least, this one doesn't. It's instrumental for a start. But not in a bad way.

There is a very tiny bit of Neil's voice on this. Maybe you get a prize if you spot it. Though you probably don't.

Their score for Battleship Potemkin was a bit "meh". This is not in any way "meh".

Programmed bloopy synths go far better with orchestral brass than you'd expect.

They should definitely do the next Bond theme, or the one after that.

German musician Sven Helbig created the orchestrations so maybe he should do the Bond theme actually. How difficult can bloopy synths be?

For a ballet score there's a hefty disco beat (though no Debussy). Third track, The Challenge is Moroder meets John Barry. You're excited now.

We've only see one ballet and were a bit bored. On the strength of this we're likely to be less bored by this ballet.

Neil & Chris composed most of act one in 2008 then finished it in 2010. Did they lose the score under a scatter cushion or could they just not be arsed?

It's not just disco and drama. Help Me is a romantic, lush piano and strings thing. You'll like it if you're a bit soft and prone to weeping.

The most Pet Shop Boys-y (Boysie?) track is The Meeting, even though Neil's vocal is replaced by a plucked acoustic guitar you'd be able to tell it was them instantly. It just has one of those melodies. You know the ones.

This is very long, a double album in fact. But it ticks along at a fair old pace. We could even imagine using this as a getting ready album, which probably wasn't their intention.

If you're good at doing Neil Tennant impressions (and who isn't) you could make up your own lyrics and sing them over the top. That probably wasn't their intention either.

So there you go.

Tennant/Lowe - The Most Incredible Thing is released on March 14.

The ballet runs at Sadler's Wells in London from 17-26 March. Hurrah!
