It's not all flouncing about on a jet ski in Barbados while sipping Bellinis under the scorching sun for celebrities this Christmas. Well, not for Steven Tyler, who has just released a press statement to Rolling Stone magazine to announce that he's checked himself into a rehab clinic to treat an addiction to painkillers...

The 61-year-old Aerosmith frontman had been taking drugs to help him cope with 10 years of performance related injuries.

In the statement, he announced:

"I am taking responsibility for the management of my pain."

And despite reports he had left the band, he added that he was  "eager to be back on the stage and in the recording studio with my bandmates".

He continued:

"I wish to set the record straight and say that I have read reports of a rumoured two-year hiatus and want to be clear that this is completely false. I will enthusiastically be writing, recording and performing with Aerosmith as soon as things are handled."

And he has full support from actress daughter Liv Tyler, who also released a statement about his decision to rehabilitate himself, to call him  "a courageous man" (although surely she could have just picked up the phone to have a chat with Dad instead).

"We love him and are so proud that he is getting help to balance his pain management, not just for himself but for his family, friends and fans."

Ah. If only more celebrities could be so "courageous"..

Just saying...

  • that's good. and i am glad to hear that. i see very rarely such an action, that the addict person go herself to a men's drug rehab. it is the first stage of feeling, because none had oblige him to go.

  • Not many pop or rock stars are willing to publicly admit that they have an abuse problem and check themselves in drug or alcohol rehab. Steven Tyler is doing the right thing, he is taking responsibility for his pain killers abuse and he is giving a good example to the other stars with the same problems.

  • As far as I've read, he only joined an outpatient rehab. Lets hope this time it will work and he will stop taking drugs. However, I am glad to hear that the band's members are understanding and supportive. Aerosmith wouldn't be the same without him anyway.

  • Ah those must be days you long for again - when you had hair. Just keep combing it over and reminiscing but don't spend all your winter fuel allowance on drugs this year. It's gas not gak that keeps you warm.

  • Yeah, I expect those crackly old 78s you had to listen to, with the likes of Partridge Milton and the Back Alley Scuttle Band and their rendition of "Ooh missus Franklin (I saw your ankle again)", must have been SO much better than the groovy 45s of those moptop beat combos in the 60s... bloody long haired hooligans, eh?

  • Blimey, that's a long time ago. I bet you used to go into those listening booth things when the latest 45 came out. You back then wearing a black roll neck while having fights with people over stuff like racism and the like just like in Absolute Beginners. I'm sorry I always had you pegged as a lesbian school boy. Respect.

  • Another "musician" whose profile, image and stories of yore far exceed the reality. Yep, the succinct 'style over substance'.

Trufax - Tyler was a backing singer for the brilliant Left Banke (famous for Walk Away Renee, Pretty Ballerina, check them out) back in 1967....

  • If he took responsibility for the shit-fest of aural torture that he and his "band" have put us through over the course of their career then he'd have to offer up his life as a sacrifice.........a bit like boyzone did with that Gateley fella.

  • "I am taking responsibility for the management of my pain.". What, no mention of the pain caused by his band's corporate rock wank released over the last 20 years?
