"If you thought Claire Danes was good in Terminator 3, this will blow your mind"

If you watched the Golden Globes and came away from the experience with any coherent thoughts other than "can I bill someone for the 6 hours of my life?” The thoughts might have been along the lines of, "an American drama I've never heard of is winning everything," and "is that Claire Danes? Jeez, has she finally sacked her agent?"

After an October release in the States, the critically acclaimed Fox drama Homeland is finally coming to the UK. Often a critic’s dream can be a bit of a viewers nightmare, but on the strength of the first episiode it seems worthy of it's praise. If you thought Danes was an acting marvel in Terminator 3, then this is liable to blow your mind. [Worst career choices ever – Ed]

The Homeland of the title is Homeland Security, with the action being focused on Marine Sergeant Nicolas Brody (Damien Lewis doing a nice job of an American accent) and Carrie Mathison (Danes) a CIA Agent. You might be worrying that this is just a gratuitous vehicle to whack Damien in yet another soldier uniform and then get him out of it again. However, there is considerably more to the plot than that. Although yes, there is a fair amount of that as well. So if naked Damien is your bag, then enjoy.

The show starts with us seeing that Mathison (Danes) is a bit of a maverick agent. For a start she's on her mobile while driving. Not handsfree. In Baghdad. Mental. Before being sent home, she thankfully finds out from an informant that an American POW has been turned.

We then find out that missing-in-action Marine Sergeant Brody has been found after 8 years and is coming home. Despite being a maverick, Carrie can still do basic math(s). She concludes 2+2 equals Brody being the turned agent. He's back to a heroes welcome but Carrie's pretty sure he's a security risk. The action follows Brody settling back into life (with his wife – Anna from the remake of V) whilst Carrie tries to prove her suspicions are correct, often using unorthodox/illegal methods.

It might all sound a bit simplistic but with an emotionally damaged soldier, back from 8 years in captivity, and Carrie seeming like she could potentially be massively unstable as well, it's pretty gripping stuff. Plus, you know, there’s the uniforms and nakedness. Enjoy.

Homeland starts on Channel 4 on Sunday, February 19 at 9.30pm
